It was a nice summer
evening. The sun hadn't set yet and I was on the deck reading. My husband opened
the back door and was chatting with me. All of a sudden, out of nowhere Lucy Cat
appeared in the open doorway and darted out and ran under the deck, and then
into the bushes. We tried everything to get her back but nothing worked. Lucy is
a house cat and not used to the outdoors. My husband suggested, and I agreed,
that we should just wait on the deck because she's a "fraidy cat" and would come
back to her familiar surroundings soon. We waited and waited.
Finally we went to bed hoping she would appear in the morning. Morning came and
no Lucy Cat.
This is the cat who loves to sleep inside my robe when I read at night.
This is the cat who tries to climb up my leg because she wants me to pick her up
so I can rock her or nuzzle her. This is the cat who is so gentle, how was she
going to survive in the cruel world?
I
passed out flyers around the neighborhood. A week went by and no Lucy. I was
getting desperate. All of a sudden I had a brilliant thought -- Go see Nancy
Weber!
Nancy asked if I had put a colored picture of Lucy on the flyer because that was
very important. Nope I hadn't. I again saturated the neighborhood with a new
flyer with her picture. Nancy told me she felt Lucy Cat was not very far from my
house. She strongly sensed something about a "number '2 house: and "drainage."
Aha, I said. It must be the house just around the corner.
It
has a street number of "2" and a sloping backyard. (There were a couple of other
houses nearby which also fit Nancy's "number 2" and "drainage" description, but
they were on the corner of busy roads, and my "fraidy cat" Lucy hates loud
noises.) So I visited this house around the corner in the next 2 weeks many,
many times, all times of the day and night. I even woke up once at 2: AM and in
my robe walked over with my flashlight to see if she was around because Nancy
said that she probably wouldn't come out in the daylight when people were
around. No Lucy Cat.
Three weeks after she left, on a rainy dark evening, my neighbor, Phil, on the
next block, who I knew slightly called to tell me my cat was on his deck! I told
him I would be right over, and asked which number house he lived in. He said,
"Number Two." Ohmygosh - I knew positively he had my Lucy Cat!
Nancy was right on the money. I never checked that house because Phil lived in
one of the two houses I discarded as possibilities because they were by the busy
street. My rational mind had been working overtime, instead of my intuitive one.
Lucy was there because Phil had dog food and water on the deck for his dog - the
noises from the street were secondary to a hungry tummy!
Lucy is glad to be back home curled up in my robe or draped around my neck which
she loves. Unfortunately, my husband and I agree that, if given the opportunity,
Lucy would like to have another adventure outdoors. She sometimes looks slyly at
me and I know she is thinking, "Nancy will find me!"
