Young Living Essential Oil Facts

Is Young Living Organic?

A letter from Vicki Opfer, Young Living Diamond
Regarding the organic issue... It's my understanding that while our oils are organic, and actually our standards are higher than anyone else's anyway, some of the farms we use are in countries which do not certify anything as organic.

Small companies, which sell oils in small batches, can list on the bottle whether something is wildcrafted or organic, only because the broker, who sold them the oil says it is. They don't tell the truth, but at least the small company can hold the GC in their hand that the broker gave them, as "proof" as pitiful as that is... Gary found that brokers rarely actually sent the oil that was from the GC. They'd find a good looking GC, and send it, and tell the customers pretty much whatever they wanted to about the oil. Didn't make it true however...

When Marc (Marc Shrueder is the chemical formulator for YL ) was looking for another clove distiller, and visited the distillery, he had them turn the basket upside down which showed that there were twigs and leaves at the bottom, getting ready to go into the distiller with the clove buds. Obviously, THEY were not chosen to provide our clove oil. Some other unsuspecting essential oil company bought it, instead... and I'm sure they told them it's "organic."

There's much more to this purity issue than labels.

Young Living's Statement
Our oils are not 100% certified organic; however, we know that providing organic products to our members is important to them as it is to us. That is why we strive to use organic matter in everything we grow, process and sell. Thus we do not use chemical fertilizers or pesticides on our farms. Young Living(r) recognizes and supports the standards set by Afnor and ISO for essential oil commerce, and we pride ourselves on meeting all Afnor and ISO standards. In addition to these external regulations, however, Young Living(r) also sets and exceeds a higher internal standard, built upon the magnitude of our own rigorous QA requirements. This standard is commonly known as "Therapeutic-Grade." In order to achieve "Therapeutic Grade" classification, each essential oil must scientifically prove the designation naturally, without excess manipulation, refinement and or spiking, and meet specific criteria in each of 4 key areas: Plants, Preparation, Purity and Potency.

1. Plants: Young Living(r) products are produced from quality plants grown in exceptional soil and harvested at the optimal time.

2. Preparation: Honoring a strict commitment to respecting and protecting the time-honored wisdom, tradition and art of distillation, Young Living(r) makes every effort to preserve "nature's living energy" in a manner as close to its natural state as possible.

3. Purity: Achieved through the use of quality plants and meticulous preparation, and not through ultra-refinement and sanitization, our finished product is 100% pure. Young Living(r) essential oils are unadulterated, uncut and totally free of chemicals, pesticides and metals.

4. Potency: A passion for plants and our quality guarantee result in the production of the world's finest essential oils, and the right phytochemicals at the right amounts, representing unmatched strength and efficacy.

While there are oils produced by competing companies that meet Afnor and ISO standards, they don't match Young Living's(r) stringent "Therapeutic-Grade" requirements, and should never be considered similar class. Although we pride ourselves on meeting established industry requirements, Young Living sets the bar for quality standards and stands alone in the production of "Therapeutic Grade" essential oils.

What Sets Young Living Oils and Supplements Apart?

Ninety percent of essential oils sold in North America are Grade B or lower. These oils may contain dilutants, chemical solvents, or degraded plant molecules. Such oils may cause problems for users. Young Living Essential Oils (YLEO) are pure, uncontaminated, and therapeutic grade:

• Many YLEOs are made of plants grown on the Young Living farms, which are uncontaminated by   chemical fertizilizers, pesticides, fungicides, or herbicides.

• Mineral content of the soil is crucial to proper plant development; Young Living nourishes its soil with   enzymes, minerals, and organic mulch.

• YLEO farms use only deep-well, reservoir, watershed, or mountain stream water because of its   purity and high mineral content.

• Harvests are carefully timed—if plants are harvested at the wrong time, they may provide a   substandard essential oil.

• Distillers are located close to the fields so plants do not become contaminated in transit. For oils   sourced abroad, Young Living often brings its distillers right to the fields.

• With the exception of jasmine, onycha, and citrus oils, which cannot be extracted in this way, all YL   oils are steam distilled at low temperatures and pressures, using chemical-free spring water and food   grade stainless steel distillers. Distillers are never cleaned with synthetic chemical agents. If a   distillation gets too hot, the plants and oil in the distiller are discarded. These time-consuming and   labor-intensive techniques preserve the beneficial compounds in the oils.

• Oils manufactured by Young Living must pass independent testing before they are sold to ensure they   are free of all contamination and meet the standards for therapeutic grade oils set by AFNOR   (Association Française Normalization Organization Regulation) in each case where those standards   exist. Other oils may claim to be “therapeutic grade” but if the label does not say “AFNOR,”
“ISO-AFNOR,” or “EC-AFNOR” there is no guarantee that they meet this standard. The   company’s adherence to these standards means that Young Living routinely rejects 30 to 40 percent   of all plant materials offered by outside suppliers.

• Young Living nutritional supplements are made of nutrient-dense, natural, whole ingredients and are   free of sugars and artificial sweeteners. Most are enhanced with therapeutic grade essential oils, Dr.   Gary Young discovered in clinical practice while doing bacteriology studies with blood that many   people had a substantial amount of undigested protein in the blood serum that could not penetrate the   cell membrane because of low oxygen levels. When he enhanced foods and supplements with   essential oils, he did not detect any undigested food in the blood. He also discovered that   supplements enhanced with essential oils increase the absorption of food nutrients and aid in   detoxification.
